Cupping

Having the ability to move freely physically is something many of us take for granted. Whether you are trying to overcome inflammation, reduce swelling or experience relaxation and well-being, Jennifer offers a specialized cupping technique utilizing glass jars to provide pain and toxin release, and to aid in stress management.

What Is Cupping Therapy?

Cupping has been used as a solution to ease adhesions deep within the muscles and connective tissues. The process can also reduce pain and muscle knots. The procedure is also designed to release toxins and minimize their circulation by drawing them to the surface of your skin.

Cupping therapy benefits are an intrinsic part of Eastern medicine. It has been described as evacuating “the morbid materials from the compromised organs.”

The process of cupping in Chinese medicine assists in facilitating the flow of lifeforce, or ‘Qi’ around your body. There is also the belief cupping can balance the negative and positive, or yin and yang, thus restoring balance, as well as improve the body’s resistance to pathogens, increase blood flow, and promote a reduction in pain.

Styles of Cupping Therapy

Jennifer believes cupping can have a positive effect on your lymphatic system, influencing the flow of lymph and stopping fluid build up which can prevent toxins from being flushed out. Your lymph system removes waste from your body. During your treatment, Jennifer will place the glass jar cups on many various body surfaces, but most frequently the neck, shoulders, back, hips and legs. The most common area for placement to get optimum cupping therapy benefits is on the back, however some patients have facial or cosmetic cupping where cups are placed on the face.

There are three types of cupping therapy styles, which can offer positive results in treatment. These include:

  1. Dry cupping which uses suction only
  2. Running cupping – with this method, the cups are moved around the body using oil as a lubricant to massage the area. Jennifer uses medicinal analgesic liniments and oil, which helps to ensure a smooth glide across the skin.
  3. Flash cupping – here, cups have repeated suction then released quickly on one area of the body.

Cupping with Jennifer Ryan, LAc in Playa Vista is carried out with bell-shaped glass cups. These glass cups deliver a more comfortable experience and better results.

Jennifer will talk through your treatment options at your appointment to decide which style will offer the most beneficial results. She may also suggest having cupping in tandem with another treatment, such as acupuncture or moxibustion.

What Are the Benefits of Cupping?

Cupping can support cell repair and increase the body’s ability to create new connective tissue, and boost immunity.

Research has suggested cupping can also eliminate uric acid – this substance is produced when you try to digest certain foods. When you have high uric acid levels, it can lead to increased acidity in your blood and urine.

Jennifer uses cupping therapy to promote the release of toxins from the body and stimulate immune responses in patients, both locally and systemically.

She treats the following conditions with the process:

  • Arthritis, including rheumatoid arthritis
  • Back pain, neck pain, knee pain and shoulder pain
  • Plantar fasciitis
  • Breathing problems, such as asthma
  • Headaches and migraines
  • High blood pressure (hypertension)

What to Expect at Your Cupping Therapy Appointment

Jennifer has created a relaxing and friendly environment at her Silicon Beach practice in Playa Vista so you can get the most benefit from your cupping therapy treatment. She will ask you what symptoms you have been experiencing, and typically takes a detailed health history if this is your first visit.

Jennifer then places the cups on your skin – you will feel a sucking sensation and pressure as the cups are suctioned. Depending on your style of treatment, Jennifer may use heat to place the cups.

Jennifer specializes in fire cupping. She uses an alcohol-soaked cotton ball which is lit and placed for a fraction of a second inside the glass cup and then removed. This heats the air inside the cup. The cup is then placed onto your skin. The heated air inside the cup creates a vacuum as the air cools on the outside of the cup and draws your skin and muscle into the cup. You will rest a few minutes before the cups are removed.

Dry cupping typically takes between 5 to 10 minutes.

Running cupping which involves massage and oil, can last from 10 to 20 minutes and is booked in a 30-minute time period. Flash cupping is a fast process and treatment time is usually between 5 to 10 minutes. Usually patients will have 3-5 cups in the first session. It is rare to get more than 5-7 cups.

After your treatment, your skin may appear red, or you will show light bruising after the session. Typically, any discoloration or marks have disappeared within 7 days of the session.

I cannot say enough positive things about Jennifer and her healing work. A few years ago, after only two acupuncture treatments,  I could open my jaw pain free - this was astonishing after three months of physical therapy treatments which did not help the issue. I had tried other acupuncturists but never saw such tangible results.
