Acupuncture points on the body are viewed as places to stimulate nerves, muscles and connective tissue. By stimulating these specific points, it can boost your body's natural painkillers.
Acupuncture has been available as a treatment for over 2000 years in Chinese medicine. National Institutes of Health (NIH) studies have shown that acupuncture is an effective treatment alone, and it can also be used with a combination of conventional therapies to treat the following:
Acupuncture points are believed to stimulate the central nervous system. During the process, chemicals are released into the muscles, spinal cord, and brain. These biochemical changes can stimulate your body's natural healing abilities and improve physical and emotional well-being. The practice of acupuncture is also now considered to be effective in treating a number of respiratory and digestive conditions. You may benefit from having acupuncture for the following:
When you come for your appointment, Jennifer will work through a personalized treatment plan with you. At her acupuncture practice in Playa Vista, Jennifer has designed a treatment room to inspire relaxation and calm. During your acupuncture treatment Jennifer inserts ultrafine needles into specific spots on your body. Insertion of the needles usually causes very little discomfort, and she will work with you to guarantee your treatment is as pain-free as possible.
Jennifer takes a unique approach to her acupuncture, considering the whole body and mind, to provide a unique experience. To determine the type of acupuncture treatment that will help you the most, Jennifer will ask you about your symptoms, behaviors and lifestyle.
To define the best treatment plan, Jennifer may also do the following during your appointment:
Your first session and treatment may take up to 90 minutes. When you come in for further appointments, they will usually take one hour. Jennifer may also incorporate other treatments to improve your ability to get back to optimal health. These can include cupping, herbal therapy, or moxibustion.
Typically Jennifer recommends at least two treatments per week for acute or chronic pain. However, the number of treatments will depend on your condition and its severity.
Acupuncture points are in a multitude of different areas around your body. The process of needle insertion can often be far removed from the site of your pain or ailment. Jennifer will walk you through where she will insert the needle and if you need to take off any clothing for her to carry out your treatment. She wants you to feel calm and confident during your acupuncture session and has designed her process for you to achieve peace of mind.
Typically, during your treatment, Jennifer inserts ultrafine needles at various depths at strategic points on your body. The insertion usually causes little or no discomfort. In most cases, people don’t feel them inserted at all, but there may be a very mild, aching sensation as the needle reaches the correct depth. This is known as the ‘Da Qi’ sensation. This sensation will be mild at first and will decrease as the mind and body relaxes throughout the course of the session, usually diminishing to no sensation at all by the middle or end of the treatment.
Most people report feeling minimal discomfort as the needle is inserted, which is placed to a point that produces a sensation of pressure.
Usually, Jennifer will insert between 5 – 20 needles during a treatment. In some cases, Jennifer can manipulate the needle after it has been placed. Needles are then left in place for 20 minutes as you relax. When the needles are removed usually patients experience very little or no discomfort.
Jennifer will often pair acupuncture with other treatments to maximize the benefits of your session.
She will use other types of stimulation on your pressure points. These can include:
Jennifer expects patients to feel relaxed or energized after their treatment. There are multiple benefits from having acupuncture, however they can sometimes be difficult to measure. Jennifer will continuously assess your progress to offer the right treatment plan for you.
